Retreat from Paradise and Socialism Fails In Australia

About

This course explores the aftermath of the 1890s economic depression in Australia, focusing on Melbourne’s sharp decline as families faced destitution and emigration drained the workforce. Students will examine the rise of rural labor colonies as a response to the crisis and delve into William Lane's failed socialist utopia in Paraguay, where ideological rifts tore apart his communal experiment. We’ll also investigate Western Australia's transformation during the gold rushes, fuelled by massive infrastructure projects like the 600-kilometer water pipeline, and how small-scale farming and export industries helped stabilize the nation amid economic upheaval.
